When generosity gets hijacked

Charity appeals surge in December — and so do the fakes that imitate them.

The scam

Cloned charity websites, emotional social posts with a payment link, and cold calls "following up on your pledge" all divert gifts to criminals. Some collect card details for later fraud; others simply pocket the donation.

How to stay safe

  • Give through the charity's own site

Type the address yourself or use a recognised giving platform; check the registration number if you are unsure.

  • Never donate under pressure

A genuine charity will accept your gift tomorrow. Anyone who needs it this minute is not one.
