How to set up two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication adds a second lock to your accounts, so a stolen password alone is not enough to get in. It is one of the simplest, most effective security upgrades.

Why this matters

Most account takeovers begin with a leaked or guessed password. A second layer of security blocks the vast majority of these attacks, even when your password is compromised.

Step by step

  1. Open the security settings of the account you want to protect.
  2. Choose two-factor or two-step verification and start setup.
  3. Choose an authenticator app or hardware key method over SMS where possible.
  4. Scan the QR code or register your key, then confirm with a test code.
  5. Save the backup recovery codes somewhere secure and offline.

BlackCloak tips

Avoid SMS codes for high-value accounts, as they are vulnerable to SIM-swap attacks. A physical security key offers the strongest protection for email and financial logins.
