How to identify social engineering attacks

Social engineering manipulates people, not machines, tricking you into revealing information or granting access.

Why this matters

Even strong technical defenses fail if someone is tricked into handing over a password or approving access. Attackers exploit trust, urgency, and authority to do exactly that.

Step by step

  1. Be wary of unexpected messages creating urgency or pressure.
  2. Verify requests for money or data through a separate, known channel.
  3. Watch for impersonation of bosses, banks, or trusted brands.
  4. Never share passwords, codes, or sensitive details on request.
  5. Slow down and confirm before clicking links or opening attachments.

BlackCloak tips

Treat urgency and secrecy as red flags, as genuine organizations rarely demand instant action. When in doubt, hang up or pause and verify independently before responding.
